FREE EVAN GERSHKOVICH
On March 29, 2023 while reporting in Russia, Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich, the son of Jewish refugees who escaped the Soviet Union, was arrested by Russian security services and charged with espionage. He is the first American journalist detained in Russia on such charges since the Cold War.
On July 19, 2024, Gershkovich was sentenced to 16 years in prison in Russia.
The Jewish Federation of Southern New Jersey is committed to supporting Evan and his family through this time and encourages you to join us in these efforts.
Here are some ways you can get involved and learn more:
- Write a letter (or a new one) to Evan at freegershkovich@gmail.com. This effort, coordinated by his Wall Street Journal colleagues last year, ensured letters are translated into Russian by volunteers, and mailed to the prison where Gershkovich is being held.
